We’re in the latter part of October now and I intend to enjoy every moment of it. We only get one October each year, so I think it’s important to take each month in stride and enjoy the autumn while it’s here. There’s a particular magic about Octobers and I’m so glad we have them in this life.
What are my 10 favourite things about October? Let me count them! β€
#1. Later sunrises – You can wake up around 7 AM if you want to catch a glowing sunrise. They seem extra beautiful this time of year – maybe because the summer ones happen too early for me. LOL What a lovely way to start the fall day.
#2. Special hot drinks – There’s particular hot beverages, such as pumpkin flavoured ones, that only come around when the weather starts cooling down. In the summer we get splashy, bright cool drinks at our favourite cafes, while in the autumn, we get those familiar, comforting warmer concoctions that make you feel cozy.
#3. My sister was born in October – When I was 5, I was gifted with a new baby sister in October. I think there’s something special about autumn babies, because my sister is pretty amazing. π
#4. Crisp walks outside – When the air cools off, I feel even more inspired to take nature walks and hikes. You can do more strenuous ones without overheating. I also love how crisp and spicy the air is once the leaves start to change. It makes me want to be outside even more.
#5. The colourful leaves – I’m sure everyone can agree this is one of the most iconic parts of fall. I love how vibrant those leaves look as they change to gold, orange, and red. It’s an opportune time to take some amazing pictures of fall foliage, do crafts or art projects related to leaves and pine cones, or jump into a pile of leaves!
#6. The rain – I live in the Pacific Northwest, so the rainy season starts in mid-October. I actually moved out here in part because I appreciate rain and how it makes me feel. I love a rainy forest walk or writing at a cafe as raindrops patter on the windows. Rain transforms the world, refreshes, and gives life. It’s beautiful.
#7. Halloween – Being creative, I love the opportunity to get artsy with makeup and a costume to dress up as someone different for the occasion. I also love seeing what other people dress up as if they celebrate it. I’m 0% witchy and don’t subscribe to the ghostly parts of the season, but I 100% love the creative times.
#8. Fairs – This is the season where we’ll normally have fairs and haunted houses complete with food wagons and fun games. Of course, with Covid, these things have been halted in many areas, but the fall festivals always bring such a cool, almost eerie vibe that goes well with late October.
#9. Boots – I LOVE fall fashion more than any type of season. There’s just something about coats and boots that looks so sharp to me. While summer fashions can be lovely as well, they can get a bit slouchy as the heat goes up and we just want to wear as little as possible to stay comfortable. Fall fashion, on the other hand, can have so much interesting structure with all the different layers you can wear. I love it so much!
#10. Thanksgiving – I LOVE turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes with cranberries on the side. This is the time of year to fill up on this type of meal as often as you like, because it’s everywhere. It’s also a chance to have some time off and I’ll schedule a Zoom call with family on the Thanksgiving weekend so we can catch up on what’s happening. Good times! π
I hope you’ve been having a nice October so far, everyone. I’m wishing you an amazing rest of the month! It will be exciting to see what November has in store. β€
I love this list, and agree that Fall fashion is bestπ Like you said summer is less about the clothes and more about staying cool, but when the seasons change we get to wear our jackets and coats and it actually feels like an outfit. But in winter being bundled to oblivion doesn’t really feel fashionable
True lol fall is the perfect happy medium. π
Hi Sara, I was confused for a minute with your comment about Thanksgiving. Then I remembered Thanksgiving is celebrated in October in Canada, whereas it is November down here in the United States. Sometimes my mind isn’t as quick as it used to be!
No worries lol that’s understandable. π
I wish we had autumn here. Alas, I’ll just have to live vicariously through you π
Oh noo. It must be quite warm there.
It is. It’s almost 7PM and we’re 28Β°C here, haha.
Oh my gosh I had no idea it’s so warm there! It’s still July where you are.
I was reading this earlier and got distracted by a phone call. I love October as well. There’s a magic in the air, a crisp smell of Fall here in New England, that we don’t have in September or November. The walks and hot drinks are definitely winners as well! And of course, sweater weather! I love a good sweater or hoodie, jeans, and boots!
Hey thanks so much for coming back to read the rest. π You’re right about that special magic in the air during October. There’s no other energy like it, really. There’s something so cute about the sweater-hat-boots-and jeans combo. π Love it! β€
